This page describes how we commission, check, fund and correct our work. It is written to be held to.
We do not accept press trips or hosted stays. Every hotel, meal, flight and tour mentioned in an article was paid for at the normal rate, unless the article states otherwise in its first paragraph.
Where an exception is unavoidable — a permit that cannot be bought independently, an operator with a single vehicle — it is disclosed at the top of the article, not in a footer.
Our newsletter carries one sponsor per issue, marked as such above the content. Sponsors have no input into editorial and are not told in advance what an issue contains.
We do not run sponsored articles. We do not run affiliate links inside article text. Where a link appears in a resources list and pays us, it is marked.
Every article is checked against three standards before publication:
When we get something wrong we correct it on the article, with a dated note explaining what changed. We do not silently edit, and we do not delete an article to make an error disappear.
Material errors are also noted in the following newsletter. If you have found one, tell us — corrections are the only feedback we act on immediately.
We ask before photographing identifiable people, and we do not photograph children without a parent's consent. We do not use images of people in distress. Captions name people where they have agreed to it and say where and when the image was taken.
Images are not composited or materially altered. Ordinary adjustments — exposure, contrast, straightening — are fine; adding, removing or relocating elements is not.
We do not publish machine-generated article text or machine-generated images. We use machine translation as a first pass on non-English sources, and every such source is confirmed with a human speaker before it is quoted.
We decline to write up locations where the likely effect of coverage is harm — sites with no capacity management, fragile habitats, and communities that have asked not to be publicised. This is a judgement call and we get it wrong sometimes in both directions.
Everyone whose work appears here is credited by name, with their permission — writers, photographers, fixers, guides and translators alike. We do not publish anyone's contribution without agreeing first how they want to be named.
