Beyond The Geo is an independent travel publication about places — and about the practical, unglamorous business of getting to them.
It started in 2019 as a set of notes kept for personal use: which border crossing closed at eight, which guesthouse had hot water, which hike was worth the permit fee. Those notes were more useful to other people than anything else being published, which turned out to be the whole idea.
Long-form travel writing with numbers in it. Every article aims to answer the questions that come after "is it beautiful" — what it costs, when to go, what fails, what the person who lives there thinks about it.
We cover ten areas: destinations, city guides, food and drink, culture and history, adventure, photography, sustainable travel, travel tips, places to stay and slow travel. What connects them is a preference for specificity over atmosphere.
We do not publish sponsored articles disguised as editorial. We do not use affiliate links inside article text. We do not photograph people who have not agreed to it, and we do not caption working people as timeless or simple.
We also do not publish "hidden gem" articles about places that are neither hidden nor able to absorb the traffic. If a village of four hundred people has one guesthouse, writing it up is not a favour to anyone.
A small editorial team and a handful of regular contributors. We work with people who live in the places they write about wherever we can — which is slower, and better.
Reader subscriptions, a weekly newsletter with a single clearly-marked sponsor, and print sales. No display advertising, no data sold, no tracking beyond aggregate page counts.
If you want to know more about a specific policy, our Editorial Policy page is the long version — and if something we published is wrong, we would genuinely rather hear about it than not.
